If you are looking for a new spot to explore then look no further than DJ Wilcox Natural Area located between Michigan Street and Wilcox Road just off Old Dixie Highway in North Ft. Pierce (east of Indrio Rd). The nature area was named after the past owner of the land and County Commissioner, Dewey Wilcox. Open from sunrise to sunset, this preserve stretches across 105-acres of pine flatwoods, hammock and bay-gall swamp, and mangrove swamp.
It has two trails: a one-mile inner loop trail—which includes an alligator pond and a self-guided tour–and an outer trail that borders the Indian River Lagoon. Other areas of interest include the remnants of an old homestead (circa 1925), an observation tower, and a dock. Commonly seen wildlife include alligator, pelican, osprey, red-shouldered hawk, ibis, herons, egrets, wood stork, and spoonbills.
