We have all been waiting in anticipation when we can go back to “normal” after this devastating COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has been an invisible enemy wreaking havoc on all our lives and businesses. So, when the beaches were closed a month ago to “flatten the curve” and help slow down the virus spread, our hearts sank. What happened to our American freedoms and dreams? It was a sacrifice for all of us because peoples lives and health are more important, especially those on the frontlines. As our quaint town comes to grips with the struggling businesses and assorted problems the announcement of the beaches opening was a breath of fresh air we all needed. But there’s a catch, the beaches in St. Lucie County and Fort Pierce will be open for walking, jogging, fishing, surfing, swimming, snorkeling, collecting seashells, kayaking and paddleboarding. However, social distancing is still required and recreational groups of 10 or more people are prohibited.
The following activities that are on the “no go” list include partying, picnicking, camping and playing volleyball, football or Frisbee. No coolers, tents, blankets, umbrellas, beach chairs or sunbathing.
Equipment for those with disabilities is allowed and the hours of the public beaches and 7am-7pm. The County and city officials recommend going to beaches that have a life guard. “St. Lucie County has many beautiful beaches for you to visit. Enjoy your own personal water sport interest from snorkeling to boogie boarding. We offer horseback riding on the beach at Frederick Douglas Memorial Park and dogs are welcome at Walton Rocks beach. So come out, have fun and cool down during those summer months. Lifeguards are stationed at Pepper Park and Waveland.”
